Flashy Lights
Sleigh's Invaders » Devlog
Okay so this wasn't my first instinct to do this, but I think that is because I don't play a lot of shoot em ups!
Flashing Outlines
I added outlines to the ships, projectiles and presents that flash different colors.
- The ships and enemy projectiles flash between white and red, to indicate danger.
- The presents flash between white and green, to indicate friendly.
- They also flash at a different rate, to kind of indicate urgency.
The real reason is so it is easier to spot good vs bad things and so sprites don't blend into the background, but it is a bit more obnoxious than I would normally do, but I feel like shoot em up players love bright lights and obnoxious colors and visual effects and such (I'm not hating on that preference - it just kind of gives me a headache. I actually couldn't sleep one wink after working on this all day. I blame the flashing lights lol).
Thoughts?
Let me know if this is good or TOO MUCH!

The projectile flashing MIGHT be too much if it's every projectile, especially at the scale the lights are at. I think you'll have a homerun on your hands with a bit of tweaking.
For what it's worth, in my game the projectile color is red for the enemy, and it only lights up if there's a specific reason. There's muzzle flashes when they are fired, but no on going lights.
Just my thoughts. I'd leave the flashing lights on the enemy though, I think that's fun
Makes sense, thanks for the feedback! I'm kind of figuring it out as I go, heh
